From Sorrow to Peace is a reflective programme tracing the emotional arc of early vocal music — from longing and melancholy to reconciliation and serenity. Centred on the intimate dialogue between voice and lute, the concert explores the expressive language of late Renaissance and early Baroque song, where poetry and music are inseparably intertwined.
The programme moves between English lute song and Italian monody, revealing shared themes of love, fragility, devotion and transformation. Spoken reflections guide the audience through this journey, illuminating the rhetorical power and emotional immediacy of the repertoire.
Performed on period instruments within the resonant acoustic of St John the Baptist, Holland Road, the concert offered a chamber-scale meditation on loss and renewal — a musical passage from sorrow to peace.

Il ritorno d’Ulisse in patria is a landmark opera of the early Baroque, composed by Claudio Monteverdi with a libretto by Giacomo Badoaro and first performed in Venice in 1640. Drawing on the final episodes of Homer’s Odyssey, the work tells the story of Ulysses’s long journey home from Troy and his ultimate return to Ithaca, where he reunites with his faithful wife Penelope and reclaims his kingdom with the help of his son and the gods.
This project at the Ensemble OrQuesta Baroque Academy brings together instrumentalists and vocalists for an intensive workshop focusing on Monteverdi’s operatic language, stylistic nuance, early Baroque rhetoric, and ensemble collaboration. Under the artistic guidance of Marcio da Silva in stage direction and musical coaching from Predrag Gosta, participants explore historical performance practice, vocal ornamentation, continuo realisation, and dramatic expression within the opera’s rich musical and emotional world.
The residency combines daily coaching sessions with ensemble rehearsals, culminating in performances that highlight both the dramatic power and expressive subtlety of Il ritorno. This collaboration continues the Academy’s commitment to deep artistic immersion and reflects the shared dedication of Ensemble OrQuesta and New Trinity Baroque to exploring core repertoire of the Baroque era.
