MONTEVERDI Toccata and Prologue (from "L'Orfeo") - XV Belgrade Baroque Academy (2020)

Incredible artists of the Belgrade Baroque Academy perform the Toccata and the Prologue from Monteverdi's masterpiece "L'Orfeo". This recording comes from the concert presented at the Church of St. Peter in Belgrade on 29 September 2020, and it features soprano soloist Ana Torbica with the instrumental ensemble of the 15th Belgrade Baroque Academy, which includes members of New Trinity Baroque (as mentors) and the Academy participants. 05:40 Ritornello 05:56 Or mentre i canti alterno, or lieti or mesti, Non si mova augellin fra queste piante, Ne s'oda in queste rive onda sonante, Et ogni auretta in suo cammin s'arresti. 06:41 Final Ritornello English Translation: MUSIC From my beloved Permessus I come to you, illustrious heroes, noble scions of kings, whose glorious deeds Fame relates, though falling short of the truth, since the target is too high. I am Music, who in sweet accents can calm each troubled heart, and now with noble anger, now with love, can kindle the most frigid minds. Singing to a golden lyre, I am wont sometimes to charm mortal ears; and in this way inspire souls with a longing for the sonorous harmony of heaven's lyre. Hence desire spurs me to tell you of Orpheus, the immortal glory of Pindus and Helicon, Orpheus who drew wild beasts to him by his singing, and who subjugated Hades by his entreaties. Now while I alternate my songs, now happy, now sad, let no small bird stir among these trees, no noisy wave be heard on these river?banks, and let each little breeze halt in its course. It is intended to train young singers and period instrumentalists in the historically informed performance through workshops and masterclasses. In one of the most beautiful cities of Southern Europe, Belgrade, young people from all over the world gather several times per year to work with internationally renowned early music artists, exploring the music of the known and unknown composers from the periods from Renaissance, Baroque and Classicism. During the period that ranges from usually a week to up to three weeks, they explore historically informed performance, performing on period instruments and using historically accurate playing and singing techniques. Every masterclass culminates with a final public concert at one of the acoustical concert venues or churches in Belgrade, and all participants receive Certificates signed by the master teachers. Some projects extend even beyond, since BBA also offers other performing opportunities or repeat performances in other venues or cities in the area.
